The Chest of Drawers

Jamie Miller -

  • The Introduction.
    The Introduction.

Let’s get one thing straight before we go any farther. Jamie Miller should be a professional gypsy.

Now before you go calling the politically correct police, let me explain that I mean that in the most complimentary way I possibly can. Jamie is the kind of girl you secretly envy because she emanates this well-traveled, cultured aura that you constantly try to have (try being the figurative word) even though the most exotic place you’ve ever been is some random resort in Mexico. Ah-hem… And perhaps she exudes this quality because, damnit, she is well-traveled.

Walking into her apartment felt a bit like I was entering a life-size travel journal. A Turkish tapestry purchased in London here and a scarf from Istanbul there. Ain’t no thang, you’re just in the worldliest apartment eva. Add to the fact that this sweet little lady had laid out the most sophisticated spread ever (read: cheeses, wine, and Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies) for me to munch on while we chatted and played dress-up for the next few hours. What else can I say? This girl is a world-class act.

However, I actually do have some other things to say. Seeing as Jamie is the woman in charge of my hair- she’s been a hairdresser and make-up artist for the past 7 years and is currently employed here- I feel it is only appropriate that I commend her on that front. This girl is awesome. Go book your appointment now. Seriously. Funnily enough, if it wasn’t for the fact that I showed up for my hair appointment on the wrong day and at the wrong time, I would have never met this truly effortless bohemian who first put the thought in my head that I could pull off a bob.

But enough about me! We’re talking about Jamie and the fact that I couldn’t get her out of my head after our first meeting. [Editor's Note: Clearly, I mean this in a non-lesbian kinda way.]. And after spending time with her in her home, now I know why. This woman is radiant- inside and out. The girl has a killer wardrobe, but even without all of that, you find yourself drawn to her. You want to know who she is and where’s she been. And when she starts to tell you, it gets really good…

This girl doesn’t just collect random pieces here and there, she collects stories from her friends and family and from around the world. And this is why I think she should be a gypsy for life; a woman we get to vicariously live through as she hikes the mountains of Turkey, collecting tales and trinkets for us along the way.

    Enjoy her story.

    Describe your personal style.
I love being girly- wearing dresses, skirts, tights, bright colors, floral prints. That said, I also like mixing simple with bold and tend to be attracted to ethnic and tribal looking prints. I love looks from the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Pare down or stock up your wardrobe?
I’ve been trying to do both. I tend to hang on to clothing longer than I should, so I’m getting rid of things I don’t wear and don’t need. Then, I focus on collecting pieces that are a little more timeless and better quality like this scarf I purchased in Istanbul.

How does your work affect your wardrobe?
Being a hairstylist and makeup-artist, I’m up on my feet all day, so I try to have an every-other-day heel rule so I don’t wear myself out! Other than that, I have lots of freedom and can really express myself ; I can try some crazy things and be wacky and trendy! I love this yellow skirt I bought at an outdoor market in Berlin!
